Sugarbush
20 January 1990

Weather

Warm.

Conditions

Moderate. Icy, with man made made snow on prepared runs.

Overall

Following an X/Open Board meeting at the Charles Hotel in Harvard Square, Cambridge, I met with Peter Griffiths and Jim Oldroyd of the Instruction for a late Friday evening drive up to Sugarbush in Vermont.

The drive was not very reassuring. Apart from the darkness, we got lost and there was no evidence of snow, even when we got very close to the resort. The condominium was comfortable and spacious though.

The following morning was better. As with all of the successful New England resorts, there was extensive snowmaking and on the slopes themselves, there was plenty of the white stuff. Again, typical of New England it was rather hard in places.

A few turns convinced me that I did not need to go right back to the beginning, so I signed up for a novice lesson.

This proved to be pretty reassuring. Control was even possible on the icy sections, although falls did tend to hurt a bit more than in Utah.

By the end of the day, after a couple of hard falls and the use of unnatural muscles I was pretty tired and in the middle of the night woke up with pretty bad cramp.

Easy Runs

Beginners Tow : Short run, approx 70m.
Easy Street : Broad easy run, approx 800m 200’ fall
Sugar Run : Slightly more difficult, hardpacked
